It was a night at the ballpark for Tiger fans as both the varsity boys and girls were battling on the diamond for a victory tonight. The boys would fare better than the girls and finish with the win.
After an unsettling defeat to Memorial Monday night, the Tigers took down MacArthur with Steven Hooker’s pitching arm and supportive defense.
Hooker leads the city in wins (7-1) as well as strikeouts (72) and tonight he demonstrated calm poise and leadership on the mound. When asked about his performance, Hooker stated “ I struggled in the first couple of innings but found my grove after that and settled down.” He gave credit to his team for their defense and run support.
Hooker was also responsible for a triple in the bottom of the fifth to bring in a runner and force the Generals to call on their relief pitcher. With Jereme Gray up to bat next and the Tigers ahead by 2, the Generals were looking for outs. However, the Tigers would bring in Hooker and Gray before the inning was over. 5-1.
The Spring Woods defense would prevent the Generals from any further scoring and Hooker remained consistent on the mound. We have “come around and are gelling as a team stated Hooker when asked about the team dynamics. “ You might say we have team chemistry.”
Teammate Gray concurred as he called his team “scrappy” and able to find ways to pick up runs. “That’s just the way our team runs.”
Whatever term one may choose to describe this team, the Spring Wood Tigers are not to be underestimated.
Spring Woods continues district play against Ike Thursday night at Lansford with Gray pitching while MacArthur will take on Stratford.
