DEER PARK, TEXAS The Region III Semi-Finals and Finals for the 2007 Boys and Girls Soccer Championship were held this weekend at the Clyde Abshier Stadium in Deer Park.

With students out for the Easter holiday the stadium had fans arriving in intervals for the four matches held under sunny skies. There was plenty of action and the best of the best arrived to demonstrate their agility, footwork, and preparation for this event.

Of course each team came with the dream of advancing to Saturday’s finals and a ticket to state next week. Although weather forecasters predicted bad weather conditions, no one could have anticipated what it would take to make that dream come true. 

       KATY TAYLOR vs. KINGWOOD  April 6, 2007 2:30p.m.                      

The Taylor Mustangs,defending state champions, battled Friday afternoon against Kingwood but could not stop the aggressive attack and well placed shots of the Kingwood Mustangs. Mustang-to-Mustang, the game ultimately belonged to Kingwood.2-0.

Kingwood’s first goal was well planned, as forward Vicky Ascensio snagged the ball and raced to the goal. Waiting for her support staff to swarm in, Ascensio sent a nice kick to midfielder Caitlin McPherson who scored from about 15 yards out.

The play was well executed. Midway through the first half, Kingwood was on the board and first to put up a point. The teams would go into the half with Kingwood up by one and the opportunity to advance to tomorrow’s final against Deer Park on the line.

The second half would prove to be a frustrating one for the Mustangs as they were denied the opportunity to score twice. Kingwood’s goalkeeper, Jenny Pence protected the net well with great saves and fingertip deflections.

However, Kingwood would add another point to the board six minutes into the second half. The arcing ball would soar just out of reach of Mustang goalie Natalie Strabala to score what would be the final point of the game.2-0.

Kingwood will match-up against Deer Park Saturday at 11:30 a.m. to determine the state contender for next weekend.

Great job to all who competed today. Great sportsmanship and poise was demonstrated on the field.
