DEER PARK, TEXAS The Region III Semi-Finals and Finals for the 2007 Boys and Girls Soccer Championship were held this weekend at the Clyde Abshier Stadium in Deer Park.

With students out for the Easter holiday the stadium had fans arriving in intervals for the four matches held under sunny skies. There was plenty of action and the best of the best arrived to demonstrate their agility, footwork, and preparation for this event.

Of course each team came with the dream of advancing to Saturday’s finals and a ticket to state next week. Although weather forecasters predicted bad weather conditions, no one could have anticipated what it would take to make that dream come true.

MORTON RANCH vs. NORTH SHORE  5: 30 p.m.

With 5: 06 minutes remaining in the game, the Morton Ranch Maverick boy’s soccer team seized their opportunity against the North Shore Mustangs and put in the winning goal of the semifinal match.1-0.

In a game dominated by the Mavericks, the Mustang defense kept the pressure on Morton Ranch. The Mavericks on the other hand took several opportunities to keep goalkeeper Alex Moreno busy with shots fired his direction.

That is until Asayat Camarena handily brought the ball downfield into North Shore territory. With a quick pass to Ricky Ortiz, the winning goal of the game was lobbed past the North Shore defenders.

With great footwork and relentless pressure, both teams executed well in this play-off match. The opportunity to score could have gone either way over the first 75 minutes of the game. However, it was to be the day for this young Morton Ranch program, Coach Sanguinetti, and a huge group of fans.

The Maverick fans never stopped cheering for the entire game and could be heard across the entire stadium. Waving their purple and white flags and standing for the entire match, the Morton Ranch soccer support system never tired.

Maverick head coach Sanguinetti continued to send in fresh legs and later complimented

the performance of the North Shore team who came into this game with an 18-3-7 record.

“They are a really good team and played well today against us, “ stated Sanguenetti.

Morton Ranch will play the winner of the Langham Creek vs. Kingwood game that will be played next.

Congratulations to both teams for an outstanding season.
