Fundraisers are a big part of the year as a cheerleader. As previously mentioned, there is not always a huge amount of financial support from the schools, so most of the money making responsibilities fall onto the team members.
Depending on the regulations that are set forth by your school/school district, you may be limited to the number of fundraisers you can do. If this is the case, choose wisely. Be sure that the fundraisers you pick are sure to generate the maximum amount of money for your efforts. Raffle tickets are usually a solid bet. Depending on the season, there's also the tried and true carwash. These two are great because they have very low overhead. The items to be raffled off and supplies for a carwash can usually be donated.
Like with any big project, the more help you have the better. Getting parents, siblings, the student body, teachers, basically anybody who's willing to help involved is a good idea. This creates a sense of community and gives people a personal stake in your success.
Advertising is also a good idea. Defiantly put a notice on your school website, but also look for affiliate sites that you can partner with. Sometimes local businesses, parent's place of employment, local newspaper, or other community sources will be willing to help. Remember though, you want to keep cost down, so no expensive ads.
The most important thing is to make a plan. Know before you begin, how many fundraisers you can do, how much money you have to raise, what your goal is, who will be participating and when your deadline is. Making a plan, with theses things in mind, will help give your events some structure and also ensure you have the most successful projects possible.
