The Spring Branch boys and girls Water Polo season has begun. Thursday at the Natatorium at Spring Woods High School the Memorial Mustangs and the Stratford Spartans practiced together to work on their game.
Although water polo is not an official UIL sport several schools in Houston have included water polo into their athletic program. The athletes that play water polo mostly come from the schools swim team.
In the game of water polo there are two teams of seven players each. Each team has one goalie and six field players. The goalies wear red caps, the home team’s field players wear dark-colored caps, and the visiting team’s field players wear white caps.
A game of water polo is divided into four quarters. At the beginning of each quarter, each team lines up on the goal line. Once the referee blows the whistle to signal the start of each quarter, the players sprint towards mid-pool, where the referee drops the ball. Whoever wins the sprint is the first to be on offense.
A goal is scored once the ball completely passes over the goal line. If a goal is scored, the teams line up mid-pool and the non-scoring team takes possession of the ball.
