Although the Stratford Spartans have dropped in their ranking, one couldn’t judge it by the pounding they put on the Mustangs Friday night.  The one-sided rivalry match ended in a 14-3 victory by the Spartans.  The Spartans dropped in their rankings due to a close game with Bellaire. Although they won their margin of victory was not what it was projected to be.

“In Lacrosse the ranking system work like that,” explained Stratford coach Matt Carr. “We only beat Bellaire by three and even though their goalie played a terrific game we still dropped in the rankings.”

In Friday night’s game the Spartans came out and dominated from the start. They had a 5-1 lead at halftime and were not done scoring. Stratford put five more goals up in the third quarter and four in the fourth quarter.

Leading the Spartans in the scoring category was Nghia Tran, Dustin Mennitti, and Stuart Graham who all had two goals apiece. Junior goalie Grant Williams did his job on the other end with 15 saves and only gave up three goals. Mason Herbert was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with two goals.

With playoffs approaching, both these teams were out there to win and showed it in their physical play. Both teams had players in the penalty box due to unsportsman like conduct, however, it was all in the heat of battle.

“A lot of these kids know each other and both team just really wanted to win,” said Carr.

The Spartans will play their final regular season game on Monday at Fort Bend and will prepare to start playoffs next Saturday. The game will be at Westchester in the evening to give several of the Spartan players time to recuperate from a.m. football practice. Klein is the projected team they will face but could change.
