Alliance vs St Thomas

and Post-Game Interviews

Day two of the State Rugby Tournament brought about more fierce competition as teams battled it out to see who would be crowned champions.

In the under 17 division it was all Katy who earned a 31-19 victory over the Woodlands. Katy took a 31-19 lead heading into halftime and pitched a second half shutout to secure their championship victory.

“These kids earned the victory because they play unselfishly and do a good job of supporting each other,” explained Katy coach Matthew Apollo

Although the Woodlands fell short in the under 17 division, they earned redemption in the under 19 division II finals with a decisive victory over Kingwood.

“These guys have worked really hard and I’m really proud of them,” said the Woodlands coach.

The Woodlands program has committed 80% of its squad to play rugby at the collegiate level. The Woodlands’ coach expressed his appreciation to all the fans and parents who have worked really hard to make the program so successful.

Thomas Eakin of the Woodlands earned the “man of the match” award for his two tries in their victory over Kingwood.

In the under 19 division I championship, the Alliance Knights earned their first state title with a 27-0 victory over the St. Thomas Eagles. The Eagles hung in the first half trailing only 8-0 heading into halftime.

It seemed the Eagles ran out of steam in the second half as the Knights were able to put up 19 more points to lock in their state tile and the number one seed out of Texas in the Western Regionals.

Alliance fullback Eric Irwin was the leading scorer for the Knights with two tries. Among other scorers for the Knights were Eric Lukins, Matt Jefferson, and Joey Tally.

Congratulations to all the rugby teams who eanred the chance to compete in the state tournament.
