Positioned intently under a gray and black tie-dyed sky, Strake Jesuit's lacrosse boys faced off against Kinkaid on their own turf at 7:30 p.m. last night. Showers light or heavy couldn't have stopped these teams from playing, as both fought for a seat in the upcoming playoffs.
Jesuit's Reid Fontenot kick-started the Crusaders by scoring the first goal of the game eight minutes into the rain Tuesday night.
KinKaid came back towards the end of the first quarter with goals by Austin Fatjo, and another by Boone Najgier, thereby establishing a theme that their goals would strike in pairs (two consecutively) for the majority of the game.
Jesuit's Taylor Inman began the second quarter with another point for the Crusaders, when Kinkaid upheld their scoring precedent by coming back again with a goal by John Shank, immediately followed with another by Evens Finger.
Harry Hastings, an injured team mate for the Crusaders, then experienced his favorite moment of the game: when “ Peter Fenolon caught the ball and scored,” bringing Jesuit up one more point.
Kinkaid ended the second with another score by A. Fatjo, who helped his team leave for half time with a two point lead on the Crusaders, 5 to 3.
“Eye of the Tiger” boomed out of the loud speakers and beckoned the players back onto the wet field to finish what they had started, beginning the next half of the game.
The second half was again jump-started by a Kinkaid player, Michael Pappas, who scored the only goal in the third quarter.
Jesuit's Kevin Layne came back with the last goal for his team, which was followed again by two goals from Kinkaid players. The first to instigate this double retaliation was mid fielder, John Spradling, followed by another from M. Pappas, also scoring the last goal of the game.
Kinkaid coach Ryan Frost commented that “both teams played pretty well considering the rain,” though it was “tough to get into the flow of the game because of all of the penalty calls."
Kinkaid's next game will be Saturday at noon, where they believe they may be facing the Crusaders again, for one last battle.
