Thursday night at St. Pius High School the St. Pius Panthers took on the St. Thomas Eagles. In this high scoring game both teams had hot bats that led to an 18-10 St. Thomas victory.

The first inning ended with St. Pius leading 2-0 after a hit grounder and a ball getting away from the catcher allowing two runners to run home. This did not deter the Eagles though, as they fought back in the second inning.

The Eagles were able to load the bases and after a center field hit by Aaron Garza he batted in three runs and landed himself on second base. St. Pius switched pitchers but Colin Bear took no prisoners as he blasted the ball out of the park to add two more runs to the board. In the bottom of the second St. Pius took advantage of missed catches at home giving themselves two more runs and after a pitching change by St. Thomas the Panthers still were able to bat in two more runners ending the second inning with a St. Thomas lead of 9-6.

In the top of third inning the Eagles continued to connect with the ball. After Faizi Mouzoon hit a runner in and positioned himself on second with another runner on third base it was Bear’s turn to bat again. Bear once again aimed for the fences and got a three-run homerun. The Panthers answered back with getting three quick outs and themselves back at the plate. St. Pius’ David Colby started the inning and made himself known by hitting a homerun over the left field fence. St. Thomas stopped St. Pius’ momentum with great fielding holding a 13-7 lead entering the fourth inning.

The fourth inning was quick, with three up and three down by both teams. In the fifth inning St. Pius covered the field by making the stops needed to hold St. Thomas to 13 runs. In the bottom of the fifth St. Pius got one run off one hit and the inning ended with the Eagles still leading 13-8.

The sixth inning was filled with more action starting with St. Thomas’ Drew Saenz and Dylan Stout finding the holes in the field to get two more runners in. St. Pius once again made a pitching change and with a third out off a grounder the Panthers step back up to the plate.  With one tagged out against St. Pius, Darr Niewoudt demolished the next pitch and rounded the bases meeting his team at home plate for another St. Pius homerun. This brought the Panthers within six, 15-9, going into the seventh inning.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh and with a hit by Saenz over the short stops head three runners made it home. The Eagles were able to hold the Panthers to only one more run in the bottom of the seventh and St. Thomas ended the game with a 18-10 win.

Next the Eagles will face off against Second Baptist at home on April 23rd.
