The Houston Christian Mustangs and the Fort Bend Baptist Eagles faced off Thursday night in a tie-breaking match up to see who would be crowned the TAPPS District 4-5A champions. Both teams came in with a 12-2 district record to battle it out at a neutral site at Taylor High School.
Houston Christian’s RK Holsey started the game on the mound for the Mustangs and pitched through five innings without giving up a run. The same cannot be said for the Eagles who gave up seven runs through five to give the Mustangs a commanding 7-0 lead heading into the final two innings.
Josh Brewer got things rolling for the Mustangs in the second inning with a single and a steal to second. Brewer then scored on an error by the Eagles which also allowed Chris Smith to reach first. Chris Ballou and Paul Prestera kept things going for the Mustangs with singles and an RBI a piece. Nino Leyja hit a double to bring in two runs to complete a five-run inning for the Stangs.
Houston Christian was kept scoreless through the next two innings but Will Vaughn started the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo homerun over the left center wall. Scott Lyon followed up the homerun with a stand up double and was then batted in by JB Wagner on a sac fly. 7-0.
The Eagles finally found some offense in the final two innings as Zac Jordan started the sixth inning with a double and reached home on fielder’s choice RBI by Joel Garza. In the top of the seventh the Eagles put three more runs on the board led by Taylor White who hit a double and Jordan who hit a two-run homer. Unfortunately for the Eagles they would not be able to keep this pace up as they fell to the Mustangs 8-4.
The Mustangs earned the district title as Holsey improved to 5-1 on the season.
“We started the season with a goal to win district and then state,” explained Mustang’s coach Ron Mathis. “We have achieved the first part of that goal, and they hope to achieve the second.”
Houston Christian will face the lowest seed from District 3 at home in the first round of the playoffs.
