The Memorial Mustang girls not only pulled off the 19-5A District Championship tonight but they did so for the second time in row beating Stratford 2-1. The Mustangs have accumulated a

28-0 district record over the last two seasons and seem to be going strong as they head into the play-offs.

There was no question Stratford “came prepared and gave it their best,” stated Mustang head coach Tina Young. “However our girls hung in there and found a way to win tonight just as they have all season.”

Stratford stepped up strong in the top of the first inning putting up the first run of the night, while pitcher Lauren Brady and Co. held off the Mustangs in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded.

With a pitcher’s battle ensuing, the bottom of the fourth inning produced the tying run for the ‘Stangs’and demonstrated the fierce rivalry and quality play of these opposing teams.

The stands were packed and the fences lined with parents, students, and fans.

Stratford came into this game needing a win to clinch the fourth place position for play-offs and Memorial came looking to keep their record unblemished.

Closer Meghan Slattery followed starting pitcher Hannah Gentry for the Mustangs. Slattery’s single allowed Leslie LeJune to cross the plate for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Memorial does not lack for talent or team chemistry. LeJune is one of the top ten players in the city with a batting average of .469, while Gentry has earned a 2.37 ERA and 13-3 W-L record this season.

“ We had a tough pre-season schedule against some of the best teams in the city,” stated Coach Young. “ I believe we are more game savvy this year as we enter play-offs; more comfortable, more confidant, and more prepared.”

**Notable the run scored by Stratford is credited to catcher Lindsey Gordon  who has been in the top three players in the city with a batting average of .500 for the past month.

The Mustangs will move into bi-district play this next week while the Spartans will play Spring Woods to determine the fourth place position for the district this weekend.
