Mustangs are speed demons, but Falcon’s have talons. “Which mascot would win in a fight?” is debatable, and too violent to risk setting-up, so suffice with the next best thing: girls with sticks. Playing fairly and good naturedly, however, the Memorial and Kinkaid girls’ lacrosse teams puzzled the question even further.
Multiple goals were scored by multiple Mustangs during the Friday evening lacrosse game with the Falcons. One Mustang, Kathryn Blum, scored three, while team mates Jordan Luedde, Courtney Jenkins, and Brit Nixon all doubled their efforts to secure two each. The Mustangs continued to score with other goals by Emily McKenzie, Kirkland Smith, Sidney Stewart, and Katharine Bruce.
While Memorial’s team boasted varied scorers, one of Kinkaid’s captains, Julie Mackay, helped her team immensely. The senior was responsible for six of the nine goals scored by the Falcon’s last night, three of which were executed by teammates Kenner Smith, Sarah Atnipp, and Laura Zdunkewicz.
Though goals put numbers on the scoreboard, it takes more than getting the ball in the net to win a game. A great team must have a solid defense, and the ability to get the ball in throwing distance of the goal. Highlights of Memorial defenders include Kirkland Smith, who popped out of nowhere to intercept a strong throw, and noteworthy blocks and checks from Memorial’s McKenzie.
Taylor Duke of Memorial also played strong defense. Always on her toes, Duke watched the ball intently, and with enough energy that Elise Tobey, a fellow defender, commented to herself about her teammate’s performance.
Kinkaid’s defense also played well, but most importantly, didn’t give up and stayed strong; helping the Falcon’s to never stay far behind for long. Abby Spalding of Kinkaid energetically jumped feet into the air to block one of Memorial’s passes, while Alex Salina’s defending caused a crowd member of her opposing team to worry aloud about how well Kinkaid was reading Memorial’s passes. Similar exclamations of “nice” could be heard of one of Spalding’s checks, and teammate Bailey Brit made some notable interceptions.
However, a team that plays well together wins together, and both teams displayed quality teamwork. Assists were made on the Memorial team by Blum, McKenzie, and Stewart, and on the Kinkaid team by Makay and Salinas, who also broke away to have some great runs along with Elaine Thurman and Brit. One of Memorial’s assets is confidently their speed, as several down-field runs were made by Nixon, McKenzie, and Luedde.
The end result was a 13-9 win by Memorial Mustangs, and though no conclusion was reached about which mascot is better, there’s considerable suspicion that both teams benefited from their stick to stick meeting Friday night…we know we were entertained.
