The Region III 5-A girls golf finals finished up Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Mont Belvieu. With high winds and threatening skies, these young ladies were fearless as they made their way through 18 holes. Among schools that competed in team play were Cinco Ranch, Clements, Cy-Creek, Cy-Woods, Katy Taylor, Kingwood, LaPorte, Elkins, Deer Park, Clear Lake, Clear Creek, Memorial, Stratford, and Westside. The individual medallist included schools such as Bellaire, Clearbrook, Cy-Fair, Jersey Village, Westbury, Westbrook, and Katy.

Clear Lake earned first place as a team with a two-day total of 628. Allyson Ferguson was the low scorer for Clear Lake shooting a 68 on day one and a 76 on day two. Other participants of the Region III champs were Lauren Hassel (158), Lizzie Trembly (160), Aly Smith (166), and Nicole Bentley (185).

“This is really exciting and it’s a long time coming,” said Clear Lake’s coach Carolyn Criatta. “I’m really happy for these girls and it’s just an awesome all round experience.”

Coming in a close second were the Kingwood Mustangs who finished with a two-day total of 642. Sarah Hemingway shot a two-day individual total of 151 with a 72 on the first day and a 79 on the second day. Other members of the second place Mustangs were Katie Craig (171), Anna Lauritsen (166), Nancy Lopez (163), and Sara Kothny (164).

The Clements Rangers took third shooting only 13 strokes more than Kingwood with a combined total of 655.

Katy Taylor’s Caitlyn Bliss shot a 72 and a 70 to earn an individual best of 142. Clear Lake’s Alyson Ferguson was only two strokes behind shooting a 144 to earn second in individual play. Clear Brook’s Janine Fellows earned third overall in individual play and captured first in the medalist division with a total score of 149. These were the only three competitors who shot under the 150 mark.

The top two teams and the top six individuals will continue on to compete for state.

“Our girls have been preparing for this with every tournament they play in,” explained Criatta. “We have wanted to be one of the best teams in the state and it showed today.”

Congratulations to all the lady golfers on a season well played. Good luck to the region three competitors who will continue on and compete for the state title.
