The static of sprinkling clouds and gusts of chilly air mimicked the attitude on the field at Tuesday evening’s Cy-Fair vs. Memorial lacrosse game. “Intensity”, ladies and gentlemen, was without a doubt the word of the night, as both teams faced off, sudden-death style.
Nine minutes into the first half, Memorial is behind 2 to 3. Both teams knit their brows and grit their teeth. One Jordan Luedde from Memorial chunks the ball into the back of the net, evening the score.
A couple great blocks from Brit Nixon (of Memorial) later, and Cy-Fair’s Caitlyn Fischer swivels past Memorial’s defense to score another goal for her team. Both sides of the scoreboard have a dance of their with own ups and downs, often evening out for only a few intense minutes.
The next half began with a tie, 7 to 7, and both teams fiercely wanting that next goal. Katie Wallis of Cy-Fair has some great breaks and runs down field (along with a couple effective blocks). She really seemed to have knack for dodging Memorial defense to sprint down the field.
Hilary Szczepanski, a defender from Memorial stayed on her toes throughout the whole game, utilized her body, and mirrored her opponent’s moves to play some eye-catching defense. Kirkland Smith from Memorial also played notable defense, and intercepted the ball. Luedde and Emily McKenzie of Memorial also had some great runs in the game
With a fickle score in favor of no one for long, the last two minutes of the game were full of nail-biting, fist clenching anticipation. The score was 12/13, with Memorial down by one. “Time?!” yelled both team’s coaches to the ref with a stopwatch. 30 seconds, and one goal by Memorial would even the score and put the game into over time.
Every fan out there hung on the hopes of scoring that one goal, or of preventing it. The ball juggled between a couple of the Memorial players for the remaining seconds of the game, but was each time redirected by Cy-Fairs offense.
“BUZZ” and the time ran out. Cy-Fair, who will now advance to state, wins the game 13 to 12.
Scorers in the second half for Memorial were Luedde, with four, Katie Harrington with two, Nixon with two, Kathryn Blum with three, and Roberts with one.
For Cy-Fair the scorers of the game were Kristin Bush, with two, Sydney Weitkunat with two and two assists, Natalie Loutchanioff with three, Caitlyn Fisher with three and one assist, Rumards with one, and Katie Wallis with two.
Cheers from one side, hugs on the other; a game is over, and for the Memorial Girls lacrosse team, also a well-played season. Congratulations to Cy-Fair, and we’ll see you at state.
