The state champion Cinco Ranch wrestling team gathered at The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch for its 2006-2007 Awards Banquet Wednesday night. The six-time district champion Cougars honored the athletes that propelled them to a record-setting year.
Cougar parent Steve Slebodnik was the master of ceremony and began by recognizing the front table guest that included Katy ISD’s Rusty Dowling, Debbie Decker, Tammy Laurence, and many others.
After dinner was served, a special presentation began. It was a roast and toast for Cinco Ranch coaches Bill Dushane* and Luke McConn**. Parents Michael Waltman, Gil Harris, Becky Sheets, and Greg Morris all took center stage to tell the audience how Dushane’s coaching and leadership has helped each of their children.
Soon after, Dushane took over the podium to honor all of his wrestlers. Freshman, sophomore, junior varsity, and varsity players all accepted plaques for their participation on the Cougar wrestling team.
The awards ceremony was next on the agenda and Dushane called each of the recipients to the front individually. The team crowned Courtney Lindley and Jamie Sheets as the year's MVP. Lindley was a state runner-up while Sheets defended his title in Austin. He is a two-time state champion.
Cinco Ranch’s Coaches Award went to Tabitha Wilson and Will McNair. Andrew Girgis and John Gioffre were named the Most Improved Wrestlers.
Dushane’s 2006-2007 team captains Nick Waltman, Matt Harris, McNair, and Sheets were asked to come to the front and pass the torch on to the team captains for next season. Ryan Slebodnik, Will Morris, Gioffre, and Lindley are the new Cougar team captains for next year.
The night ended with two videos, one team highlight video and one McConn wrestling memory video.
*Dushane was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
