The UIL Region III-5A Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Tournament took place Wednesday at Deer Park High School. The tournament was supposed to start at 8:30 a.m. but with several rain delays it finally kicked off in the afternoon.

With the kids anxious to play they hit the courts and started making their way to State. The State tournament will take place in Austin at the Lakeway World of Tennis and at Penick-Allison Courts, UT on May 7th and May 8th.

The athletes competed for the first place position and the second place state qualifier position. The second place position will take place Thursday at 3:30 at Deer Park High School. The second place position will be between the loser in the finals and the winner of the third place match.
Thursday’s competition will see:
Boys’ Singles    Jonathan Chang (Memorial ) vs Mason Harrell ( Bellaire)
Girls’ Singles     Amanda DiCarlo (Clear Lake) winner
Boys’ Doubles   Voss/Farine ( Clear Lake) vs Heckles/Shields ( Strake Jesuit)
Girls’ Doubles    Leyden/Herrera (Stratford) vs Simmons/ Ravichandran (Memorial)
Mixed Doubles  Lam/Wang (Clements) vs Pise/Hang (Fort Bend Baptist)

1st Place Winners were:
Boys’ Singles    Chris Lee (Kempner) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3
Girls Singles      Kourtney Howell (Cy Woods) 1-6, 6-2, 6-3
Boys’ Doubles   Kim/Kuo (Katy Taylor) 7-5, 7-5
Girls’ Doubles    Henry/Tomkins (Katy Taylor) 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3
Mixed Doubles  Schneider/Matusak (Katy Taylor) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2
