It was a long day for the Region III men’s golf teams who played from early Thursday morning to late in the evening. Several teams and individuals had to finish their rounds from yesterday as the weather took its toll and made for an unplayable Wednesday. The second rounds started a little after lunchtime as teams and medallists started making their way around the saturated turf. Although the turf was wet, it was still in great playing shape for the competitors considering the downpour that hit yesterday.
“The conditions of the course were excellent,” said Spring Branch Memorial’s coach Annette Romero. “However, the frustration levels were up due to the speed of the greens.”
The Memorial Mustangs took first place in the tournament as they squeaked by the Cinco Ranch Cougars by one stroke. The Mustangs finished with a two-day total of 605 and the Cougars were right behind them at 606. Memorial’s Cory Whitsett shot the tournament low of 141 to earn the number one individual ranking.
“It was a difficult day today especially with yesterday really testing everyone’s patience,” explained Whitsett. “I started well and I closed well but I just wanted to go out there and hit some good balls. I really didn’t think anything of it.”
Although Whitsett had a tremendous outing for the Mustangs, the other Memorial golfers did their part in earning the victory. Blake Nommenson and Trey Mattson both shot under 160 as Matt Sinclair and Lawrence Chang shot under 170.
For the Cougars it was Joe Logowski who shot the team low with a two-day total of 149. Matt Simmons and Kyle Isgar both had good performances for the Cougars as Simmons shot a 156 and Isgar a 151.
Lagowski’s 149 put him in a tie for the second place individual ranking along with Clements’ Matt Redmond. The two had a playoff on the 17th hole where Redmond beat Lagowski to earn the second place in the individual ranking.
Memorial and Cinco Ranch will represent Region III in team play at the state tournament in Austin.
