The Stratford Spartans hosted the Nimitz Cougars at the Stratford baseball field Friday, April 27. The Spartans were looking for the win and waiting on the news from Spring Woods. A win by Stratford and loss by Memorial tonight would result in a tie for the district championship. A win-win on the part of both teams secures the Spartans second place in District 19-5A.

The Spartans started the game off playing with a "postseason mentality." In the first inning they were able to put one run on the scoreboard and keep the mighty Nimitz Cougars at bay with the strong arm of Matt Evers.

The second inning made Nimitz cringe when Stratford's bats heated up. A total of six runs and significant batting power was demonstrated in this inning. With the crowds cheering loudly and the bats zinging, the Spartans put significant distance between themselves and the Cougs.

Three players hit doubles and brought team members home to score.  In this inning, John Sorsby recorded 2 RBIs.  A.J. Daggett’s double scored Sorsby.  Barrett Loux’s hit to the wall helped Jake Miller score a run also.7-0.

Nimitz’s Jarrod Jensen hit a double in the third inning, proving that the Cougars would not sit back and be walked on. Switching out to Chris Brown as pitcher, the Cougs were all about shutting down Stratford's bats.

Brown held Stratford to zero runs and made it difficult for the Spartans to get on base.

In the sixth inning, Daggett blasted a hit to centerfield. However, Stratford was unable to capitalize and bring in any further runs. Daggett relieved Evers to close out the game throwing heat. Final Score Stratford, 7 – 0.

As the news has come in, Memorial defeated Spring Woods and takes the first place spot in the district. Stratford captures second place in District 19-5A.

Stratford proved tonight that not only do they have the pitching power but the bats to match for a formidable run in the postseason.

Stay tuned to AC for all the latest on the field and in the next round of play.
