Stratford vs Nimitz
Friday April 27, 2007
Written by Dave Purpura

Stratford beat the Cougars by a score of 7-0. Matt Evers started and picked up the win by not allowing a run over 6 1/3 innings. AJ Daggett finished the game and held Nimitz scoreless on the evening.

Stratford scored 7 runs on 11 hits by 8 different players. John Sorsby and AJ had 2 hits and 2 RBIs each to lead the hitters. Jake Miller, Barret Loux and Will Gould had 1 hit and 1 RBI each. Travis Smith had 2 hits while Matt Evers and Carson Brown added 1 hit each for the offense.

There were two standout plays defensively. With 2 out and 2 on base in the 4th inning, the batter hit a dribbler toward third base. Matt Evers jumped off the mound, corralled the ball and fired a strike to first base to end the rally. The final Cougar batter was sure that he had a hit on a bouncer up the middle until second sacker Travis Smith showed his defensive prowess by getting to the ball and quickly throwing back to first to just beat the runner.

This was the last district game of the year with Stratford finishing in second place with a 12-2 record. Next weeks games will be against Lamar. The opener of the 3-game series will be at Delmar Stadium at 4:30 on Wednesday with Stratford hosting the second game Friday night at 7:00. The third game will be played on Saturday at 1:00 at Jersey Village if necessary. The atmosphere of each of these games should be electric and the team would love to see lots of fan support as the Spartans start a long playoff run.
