Of all the roles that a cheerleader fulfills, community leader can be one of the most rewarding. As a young person participating in athletics, your time can be quite heavily spoken for. Between practice, games, studying, friends and family, there doesn't seem to be time for much else.
The truth is, working to improve your community can actually be a great way to spend time with your friends and family, as well as help you get ready for college. Here's how...
Volunteering your time with friends and family is the perfect opportunity for you to get closer to each other, by discovering what causes you feel are worthy. Although it may seem a bit obvious, spending time together to further a cause, is quality time with a person you care about. When you
make the time for one you, as a bonus, get the other.
As far as helping you get ready for college, community service can play a big part. Most colleges have more applicants than they have open spots, so there has to be something that sets your application apart from the others. A list of community service can be one of those intangible extras that will
impress an admissions counselor.
The two aforementioned reasons may not be totally altruistic, but it doesn't mean that good won't come of the effort. Remember, doing community service doesn't necessarily mean you have to be involved with a big organization (though, there's nothing wrong with that). Find a cause you care about, or pick one with someone you're looking to get a little extra face time with, and get out there.
*if you are doing this to help build your college application, be sure to keep a record of your service as you go along. You're probably going to get so many projects under your belt, you'll hardly be able to keep up.
