A
Rugby Family
Coaching is a demanding
job and requires a great deal of time away from your family.
Luckily, I am able to counter this assertion for a couple of reasons.
First on my list is the fact that I have an amazingly understanding
and supportive wife - Sonya. She has been involved in my 23 years of
rugby in one aspect or the other and understands the pull it has on
me and the requirements it places on time. In addition, she
understands the game better than many of the coaches I know. I
believe not enough can be said for coaches’ wives and all they have
to endure throughout a season (and beyond). Her love and support has
been absolutely integral to my successes and even more important
during my times of failure – what an amazing woman! I should also
mention that she is an extremely successful professional and despite
her busy work schedule never misses a game.
In addition to having a
supportive wife I am extremely blessed to have my sons heavily
involved in the game. My oldest boy, Conor, is our team’s starting
flyhalf and leading scorer. He started varsity as a freshman and
continues to grow with each game. Despite what many people say about
coaching your own kids – I wouldn’t trade the opportunity for
anything in the world. We have a very special relationship, which I
cherish. My middle son, Riley, is our team video expert and his
sense of humor and perspective often keep me going when times are
tough. Keegan, my youngest son, is also a player and is heavily
involved with touch rugby in the Woodlands where he provided us with
many thrilling moments this season. All three are awesome kids and
the pride of their father.
The joy derived at
having your family involved in the game you love is indescribable.
We all shared a very special moment when our team won the Western
Championships this last weekend -one which will last all of us a
lifetime – I am truly blessed.
