"It's Hammer Time!" shouts Mayde Creek's Mathew Wiley Wednesday night as he runs the length of the dugout. Teammates respond by touching, shaking, and in one case, kissing the hammer. Wiley is playing a part in getting his team pumped up for their game against Cy-Fair. So far, only zeros stretch across the board, alot of zeros.
The first ball game of the series went through nine innings without a score on either side. Rarely would a player get to third, but when they did, the whole crowd was on edge: one cleat print on home away from winning the game.
The pitchers on both teams played outstanding ball, as the game, for the most part, rested heavily on their shoulders. With a runner on third, or even second, the opposing team would bite their lips and call to their teammate on the mound: "you can do this," "shake it off," anything they felt would help their man strike out the next guy up. And they did.
Some Cy-Fair's lead hitters were Caleb Ramsey, with a double and a single, Cameron Goff with a single, and Micheal Poulos with a single.Their main pitcher, Brandon Finken, threw nine innings, and had 11 strikeouts.
Some of Mayde Creek's lead hitters were Zachary Chirtos with two singles, Shawn Bennett with a single,Ryan Cook with a double, and William Handlin with a single.Their main pitcher, Matthew Wiley (or Mo, as he's known on the field) threw ten innings, 165 pitches, and 18 strike outs.
So began the 10th inning, with glowing red 0's on both sides. Ryan Florack of Cy-Fair waited on second for his teammate to bat, hoping he'd be the first to get home on either team.
His teammate bats, the crowd holds their breath, but everyone turns to see Mayde Creek catch the ball!
Before Mayde Creek has time to celebrate, however, Florack turns and sprints like lightening to third.
This is it, Mo can't let this next batter get one hit, or Florack gets home. People cheer, and The Hammer makes its rounds.
Batter up, and Mo strikes him out!
Next batter up, Ramsey of Cy-Fair. Mo throws, Ramsey hits a single sending Florack home to score the first, last, and only point of the game.
Though Mayde Creek didn't give up the bottom of the tenth, with Chirtos and Handlin both hitting their singles, the game ended with a well-fought score of 1 to 0, Cy-Fair.
