Baseball bi-district playoffs are underway, and several teams have elected to have a best-of-three series while others are having a winner-take-all match up. The Memorial Mustangs and the Milby Tigers put their fate into one game. Although scheduled to play Thursday night, Mother Nature intervened, and the game was postponed to Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs drew first blood in the bottom of the first as Jeremy Rathjen hit a lead off double to get things rolling for Memorial. After two hit batsmen to load the bases, Michael Ratterree hit a fielder’s choice grounder to drive in Rathjen for the first run of the game.
Milby pitcher Mark Almaguer got himself out of a jam, striking out M.P. Cokinos to end the inning. It turned into a pitcher’s duel over the next three innings as Almaguer and Memorial’s Greg Laswell kept their opposing offenses from scoring any runs.
Unfortunately for Milby, Laswell kept his dominant pitching through the entire game as Almaguer started to struggle in the fifth. Rathjen hit his second double of the game with only one out, but out number two followed immediately after. This would not phase the Mustangs, who started dropping down loopers in the shallow parts of the outfield. Kevin Ahrens, Cliff Vaughn, Brett Dishman, Ratterree, and Rathjen all hit singles to give the Mustangs a seven-run fifth inning.
The Tigers were unable to recover, and the Mustangs went on to secure the 8-0 victory to advance to the next round. Memorial will face the winner of Katy Taylor and Cy-Falls.
